3 1/2 Time-Outs Tuesday – Vol 2 – Insomnia Edition

1

I did not get nearly enough sleep last night. A bit of insomnia with a pinch of sick child kept me up for way too long.

Have you seen the new episode of “The Legend of Korra”? If you haven’t you should. This show is just 3 episodes in and it is already becoming my favourite show on TV. (At this moment my wife is raising her eyebrow saying in her mind “It’s a cartoon dear, cartoons are for kids”.) It is the best animated show out there. LOVE IT.

Natasha and Veronika make a Star Wars Movie

My girls and I spent Sunday morning playing around with Lego and attempted to shoot our very first stop motion movie.

The girls came up with the story and helped to set up the scenes. We used the iPad for actual shooting of the stop motion and iMovie on the iPad to edit the movie after.

The result is a bit crazy but hey it is our first movie! I can’t wait to shoot other stories that my two little film makers come up with.

Who knows maybe in the future there will be a film version of Veronika’s Story

Coffee WHY YOU TASTE LIKE PAPER!

I didn’t know what to write about until I took a sip of my coffee.  Oh my, it tastes like paper!!!

They have done it now.  They ruined my coffee.  The coffee place that I usually go to changed from freshly brewed coffee to this paper tasting coffee dispenser stand blah.

There is now officially no freshly brewed coffee anywhere near my work place.  They may force me to make my own coffee.  (Who am I kidding, I would never do that.)

If you do brew your own coffee buy it from these monks.

Alright, I’m done with this rant.

3 1/2 Time-Outs Tuesday – Vol 1 – Wednesday Edition

The baby is growing fast. He can already roll over. No more leaving him completely unattended as I go and play video games. (I don’t do that)
He is becoming a lot more vocal and drooly. Yesterday he almost ate my whole hand.

The girls are misbehaving lately more than normal. Not quite sure why. Maybe they can smell the spring outside and are dying to get out and play in the grass where they can run and scream. Summer please come.

Natasha made me a lovely “Love” card with green and gray harts inside. She is such a sweetheart. Veronika is the funniest kid in the world. She can’t wait to inherit my wife’s bras apparently.

Work is very consistently boring lately. I’ve been stuck on the same project for a long time and it’s becoming to much of a set routine. I wish I could have more time to try out new things. Maybe soon! Backbone.js looks interesting, I want to look into that.

It was the Pope’s 85th birthday this week and tomorrow is his 7th anniversary of becoming Pope. It is no secret that I am one of his greatest fans. I’ve read pretty much everything he has written. He is by far the greatest theologian the church has seen in a long time.

Review: Prospero Lost

Prospero Lost
Prospero Lost by L. Jagi Lamplighter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

From the description of the book I didn’t know what to think.

More than four hundred years after the events of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the sorcerer Prospero, his daughter Miranda, and his other children have attained everlasting life. Miranda is the head of her family’s business, Prospero Inc., which secretly has used its magic for good around the world. One day, Miranda receives a warning from her father: “Beware of the Three Shadowed Ones.” When Miranda goes to her father for an explanation, he is nowhere to be found.

I resisted reading the book for a long time because I never read the Tempest and I didn’t really want to read anything related to Shakespeare at this point. Having said all of that I did somehow force myself to give it a try, mainly because of Jeff Miller’s review. I am very happy to say that now that I have finished book one I can’t wait to start book two.

This is a great fantasy book. We have all the things necessary for an awesome adventure. Missing magician, wind spirits, unicorns, elves and demons from hell, angels and even Santa!

I will not give away any plot points for that you must read the book yourself.

Give it a try, you will be happy you did.

The elusive front end developer

We are currently interviewing for a senior web developer possition. I am helping with the process by asking all the front end related questions, basic CSS, HTML and JavaScript.

What I find amazing is that the vast majority of the people we have interviewed so far, cannot do simple front end work. They are often great with back end server coding. Amazing with SQL and database work but when it comes to the most basic CSS skills they are clueless.

I am not even asking very hard questions. I am basically asking questions that if you have ever worked on a website you should at least have an idea on how to answer them. Questions like “How do you center a block element?”

So far I think I only had one person answer it correctly. These are people who are applying for a senior position in web development!

Why is it so hard to find a good developer who can do both front end and back end work?
